About J2 Building Consultants

Our multi-disciplined team performs assessments of existing buildings to diagnose performance issues and structural damage. Next, we provide repair scopes and design documents to effectively restore buildings. Then, we provide bidding and pre-construction services, work closely with contractors, and provide contract administration to guide owners through the repair process. We specialize in residential and commercial building envelope work ranging from apartments and condominiums to commercial and high-end residential.

About the Role
We are looking for a qualified Senior Building Envelope Consultant with a passion for helping people who possess strong technical skills and will thrive in a collaborative, team environment.

What you"ll do
As a Senior Building Envelope Consultant, you'll be responsible for supporting or running the following tasks:
  • Conducting building investigations to determine the cause and origin of failures, damage, and defects due to a wide range of perils or alleged construction defects.
  • Performing evaluations and reviewing construction documents to determine code conformance.
  • Preparing scopes of work for remediation and/or design documents for repair of existing structures.
  • Reviewing data, information, and design documents to investigate the standards of care pertaining to various parties involved during construction.
  • Managing concurrent projects with varying sizes, scopes, client types, and durations.
  • Preparing clear and concise technical reports detailing observations made, test conducted, and conclusions formed.
  • Communicating technical ideas and conditions accurately to diverse audiences using industry vocabulary as well as layman's terms.
  • Regularly and directly communicating with a variety of clients and managing concurrent projects with varying sizes, scopes, client types, and durations.
  • Providing deposition, mediation, arbitration, and/or trial testimony.
  • Independently managing time and ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Contributing to companywide objectives through mentoring, participation in development initiatives, and business development.
Qualifications
To be considered for this position, you should meet the following requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years industry experience, including significant technical experience in architectural detailing of building envelope systems, roofing systems, and waterproofing systems, particularly at the interface of different building enclosure systems, assemblies, or components; architectural peer reviews; building science and performance evaluation, including condensation, moisture, relative humidity, and thermal analysis.
  • Although not required, Registered Architect (RA), Professional Engineer (PE), Registered Roof Consultant (RRC), or other relevant professional certifications are preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and effectively prioritize.
  • Ability to develop remedial design plans, specifications, and competitive bidding documents.
  • Knowledge or experience with the creation of construction documents, contracts, ASI's, RFI's, Contractor Request for Payments, punch lists, Substantial Completion forms, etc.
  • On-site project managements skills including the ability to work constructively with diverse technical specialists and trades people.
  • Direct Background and experience with residential and/or commercial building forensic engineering, addressing structural, building envelope, compliance reports, claim reports, and building envelope investigations (Preferred).
  • Comfort with one-on-one client interactions and speaking to small audiences (virtual & in-person), as well as the willingness and ability to testify in court as required.
  • Ability to clearly communicate architectural issues, verbally and in writing, to audiences with varying technical proficiency.
  • Strong working knowledge of building codes and ability to conduct independent research of codes, standards, and other technical references.
  • Strong analytical skills and the desire and ability to tackle complex problems and multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Desire to continually develop and refine technical knowledge through targeted continuing education.
  • Working skills in Microsoft 365 suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe.
Physical Requirements
The position requires the following physical capabilities:
  • Ability to attend meetings at various offices, field, and construction sites.
  • Willingness and ability to perform observation and evaluation tasks in elevated and exposed conditions.
  • Willingness and ability to perform observation and evaluation tasks in narrow, shallow, or confined conditions.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods as required to perform design, reporting, and other analysis duties.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle.

The pay range for this role is:
90,000 - 130,000 USD per year(Washington Office)
