Location: Rochester Branch

Reports To: Branch Director
Pay Rate: $16.28/hr - $17.50/hr (if relevant experience, eligible for moderate pay increase)
Schedule: Mondays-Fridays, 3:00pm-6:00pm

JOB SUMMARY

Youth Development Professional (YDP) directly impacts the lives of our Club members by engaging in safe, interactive programs and learning experiences. The role daily provides hands-on delivery of a wide variety of developmentally appropriate youth programs and activities, such as social recreation, education development, team building activities, and an overall environment to build positive relationships.

We are looking for a self-motivated and positive individual who can balance an energetic, fun, youth-focused atmosphere with professionalism and maturity.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED (or current enrollment).
  • Demonstrated experience working with youth, parents/guardians and/or community partners.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to de-escalate problems when present, and problem-solve during day-to-day activities.
  • Ability to control and manage a group of children through different activities.
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid certifications (course will be available for staff upon being hired).
  • Must pass national background check and drug screening.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Combined experience and/or formal training equivalent to a minimum six months where: (1) There is experience working with youth and knowledge of youth development, (2) Formal training and/or experience teaching youth while creating engaging learning experiences, and/or (3) Boys & Girls Club experience preferred, but not required.
  • At least 18 years old

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and supervise activities in program areas, including the Games Room, Art, Gym, Education Room, Tech Lab, and Outdoors.
  • Deliver age-appropriate programs and activities for children in grades K-5. Coverage for the Teen Center may occur on occasion.
  • Actively supervise areas to promote a safe and positive environment.
  • Maintain a positive Boys & Girls Club culture with high energy, strong teamwork, and effective collaboration with other staff.
  • Promote daily program participation.
  • Maintain productive relationships with parents, staff, and other visitors to Club.
  • Model positive behaviors for children and staff.
  • Attend branch staff meetings and mandatory monthly all-staff trainings.
  • Supervision of the front desk as needed.
  • Assume other tasks, assignments, and responsibilities as needed or directed.

ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS

This role may use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Most duties will be carried out in Club and outdoors, fields, and areas. Successful program operations may necessitate travel to trainings, vendors, agencies, out-of-town trainings, offices, and other program sites.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move office products or supplies, up to 25 pounds.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position under sometimes stressful conditions; Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone, business machines, and operate an automobile; Vision sufficient to read printed materials; Hearing sufficient to conduct in-person and telephone conversations; Speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in the normal conversational distance, on the telephone, and in addressing groups; Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, lift a minimum of 25 lbs. walk and stand for a minimum of 3 hours, and to reach overhead; Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, from the club, school, or home site to site), to drive an automobile; Physical, mental, and emotional tolerance to be exposed to the noise generated by children/youth in an enclosed environment; Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions. High energy level, comfortable performing multi-faceted projects; superior interpersonal abilities-able to interact effectively with co-workers of all levels and with the representation of other organizations and institutions. Ability to communicate with diverse personalities, tact, maturity, and flexibility.

ABOUT US

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County (BGCTC) inspire and enable youth to realize their greatness. Our eight Clubs in Lacey (2), Olympia (2), Rochester, Tenino, Tumwater, and Yelm collectively serve nearly 1,500 youth and teens annually with safe, fun, and supportive spaces during critical out of school time. Founded in 2001, BGCTC has nearly 75 employees and an operating budget of $3.3 million. The Chief Executive Officer leads the organization and receives guidance from the Board of Directors. BGCTC's administrative office manages human resources, financial, resource development, communications and marketing, and operational activities for Club locations.

The Rochester Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County was founded in 2003. It is located in the Rochester Community Center, next to other services such as ROOF, HEART High School and the Timberland Library. The Club houses a Games Room, Gymnasium, Kitchen, Teen Center, Homework Room, Art/Computer Lab and an outdoor playground with a playfield. The playground was updated and expanded in 2019 in partnership with the Olympia, Gateway and Lacey Rotary Clubs.

The Rochester Branch prepares young people for real-world success by offering programs and activities that promote Healthy Lifestyles, Academic Success and Good Character & Citizenship. The Club provides academic support, an array of educational programs, enriching games and activities, time to play and enjoy the company of peers, and positive adult role models dedicated to supporting the social and emotional growth of the youth they serve.

Through a partnership with OSPI, the Club offers a daily dinner program for all youth under 18 in Rochester. Additionally, the Rochester Club receives annual funding to run Mentoring with Youth, which focuses on improving social and emotional wellness. Family nights are a regular occurrence at the Rochester Branch and include dinner and fun activities for the entire family. The 2021 BGCTC and WA State Youth of the Year, Alizabeth A., calls the Rochester Branch her Club home!

The Rochester Branch location partners with the Rochester School District, ROOF Community Services and the ROOF Food Bank, all of whom have supported youth and families at this Club location.
