Number of Positions: 6

Start Date: Mid-May to Mid-June

Duration: Approximately 12 weeks (flexible)

Hourly: $20.90 - $28.00 (DOQ)

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Summary

Under the direction of the Public Works Operations Director, this position is required to perform a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repair tasks within a specific area of the Public Works Department. Perform general grounds maintenance duties including preparation of walking trails and fields at assigned city and park sites, or basic maintenance tasks in City rights-of-way including vegetation control, asphalt, concrete, gravel, and drainage repairs. Operates a range of small powered and specialized equipment. Provide support for special events. May perform duties of similar complexity in other maintenance areas as required or assigned.

Because of the small size of city staff, each staff member is expected to perform a wide range of field duties as may be required from time to time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of routine unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the area of assignment.
  • Assists with routine maintenance of City infrastructure to include streets, surface water, parks, grounds, and facilities as assigned; duties will vary according to job assignment.
  • Maintains landscaping, mows lawns, trim shrubs, picks up trash, clears brush, weeds, and removes debris.
  • Cleans and maintains park restrooms and other parks facilities.
  • Operate a variety of equipment, hand, and power tools.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; recognizes and reports safety hazards, traffic problems, equipment problems and emergency situations.
  • Completes work according to specific work orders.
  • Completes required daily logs, timesheets, and reports.
  • Picks up and delivers equipment, materials, parts and supplies as required.
  • Ensures regular, predictable, and reliable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Materials, tools and equipment used in performing grounds and landscape maintenance.

Skills:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Working as contributing member of a team, productively and cooperatively with other teams and external customers, with the ability to convey a positive image of the City and its services.

Abilities:

  • Ability to learn general principles of landscape and walking trail maintenance, including turf, shrubs, and trees commonly used in parks.
  • Ability to learn general principles of right-of-way maintenance including concrete, asphalt, drainage repairs and vegetation control.
  • Ability to identify work hazards and practice general safety procedures.
  • Ability to learn basic cleaning methods, procedures, and techniques with knowledge of materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision in the field.
  • Ability to safely operate light-duty trucks, hand mowers and a variety of hand tools used in park maintenance.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform a variety of physical tasks and heavy labor.
  • Ability to demonstrate working knowledge of City policies and procedures and applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

Education and Experience:

This position typically requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred (but not required): Previous experience in maintenance or other related work/field experience.

Licenses and Certificates:

Must be 18 years or older and possess a valid Washington State driver’s license or the ability to obtain one at time of employment. A good driving record is required in order to drive a City vehicle and perform work throughout the City of Kenmore at various locations. If you are selected, you will be required to obtain a driving record from the State and submit it to the City.

Additional Information:

  • Work Environment – Duties are performed primarily in outdoor work environments, which will require exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions. Work may be conducted near vehicular traffic. Frequent lifting, pulling, walking (in potentially steep or rough terrain), wading (in shallow stream or shoreline areas), carrying (tools), kneeling and crouching may be required.
  • Hours of Work – 7:00am -3:30pm (40 hours a week). This position is expected to work up to 40 hours a week during the summer. Seasonal positions are typically a 3 month assignment, however there may be an opportunity for an extension beyond 3 months, based on anticipated workload, work performance, and funding. Work can begin after reference and driving history checks have been successfully conducted and passed.
  • Safety Requirements –Required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.

  • This is a non-benefited position with the exception of sick leave, and participation in Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) through the Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) for PERS information (first bullet point)
  • This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime pay.
