This position is responsible for coordination, leadership, supervision, and the delivery of a high quality coaching program for the KYFS Athletic Club Basketball team that increases participation and performance in sports and academics. By working with high school students interested in sports, a high school coach provides the necessary practice, support and advice for the team to be successful against opposing teams in a sports season.
This is a part time position working approximately 10 hours per week, but possibly up to 19 hours depending on games and tournaments. Must be available to work on weekends and have a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the program.
Schedule is primarily in the evenings Monday to Friday, 4pm to 9pm, for practice and weekends on Saturday and Sunday for morning practice and afternoon games.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create and implement a high quality coaching program, to maximize participation and performance of competitive teams.
- Plan for each activity session to ensure the program demonstrates progression throughout, linked to the principles of Long-term Athlete Development.
- Coordinate the delivery of an innovative recreational program and attract new participants of High School levels and create pathways for continued participation.
- Ensure all equipment associated with the coaching program is correctly set up, maintained, stored and returned on completion of the coaching programme
- Implement appropriate Health and Safety policies and procedures in line with KYFS and the relevant Sporting Governing Body policies.
- Adhere to the KYFS Code of Ethics and Conduct for Sports Coaches and also the relevant Sporting Governing Body Code of Conduct.
- Provide appropriate mentoring, support and guidance to other coaches, players and student volunteers.
- Monitor and evaluate all sessions, activities and programs and provide the KYFS Athletic Club Director with concise progress reports and training logs linked to agreed work program.
- Responsible for your continuous professional development and attend relevant training courses to improve your coaching delivery.
- Provide direct leadership and supervision of youth, providing a positive role model
- Maintain required forms and reports.
- Attend monthly staff meetings and training programs as required.
- Transport youth and adults in Agency vans as needed or if needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Two years or more basketball sports coaching experience, ideally in a range of environments including schools/clubs/community/third level settings.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaboratively interact with youth, community residents, service providers, and other staff.
- Experience working with low-income, culturally, and racially diverse youth and their families.
- Appreciation and respect for diversity and understanding of cultural dynamics.
- Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed to meet program needs.
- Must be self-motivated with the ability to enthuse a wide range of participants
- Ability to work independently and/or part of a team in a fast paced environment.
- Ability to manage a group of participants effectively
- Attend all fixtures/training sessions to include all gym and field sessions
- Dependable, solution orientated, and resilient with a can do attitude
- Strong organizational, planning and time management skills with the ability to multi-task to meet time lines in the implementation of recreational activities for the program.
- Must be able to perform this job in a professional and responsible manner and be a positive role model for the participants served by the program.
- Must have or be able to acquire a CPR and first aid certificate.
- Must possess valid WA State driver’s license and complete a MVR check.
- Must pass a Washington State Patrol background check.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Travel to meetings and program sites in agency vans or personal vehicle.
- Ride in agency vans when transportation for participants and adults is needed for recreational activities.
- Work with large groups of youth and withstand increased noise levels and/or loud environments.
- Physical agility to participate and supervise youth recreational activities.
- Be able to stand for extended lengths of time to participate or implement program and activities.
- Generally good working conditions with limited or no exposure to extremes in noises, temperature, and weather conditions.
- Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds on occasion or with assistance.
