The Opportunity
WSDOT State Materials Laboratory is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer to serve as the Assistant Fabrication and Materials Supervisor. In this role, you will serve as the statewide technical program specialist in the inspection of shop fabricated prestressed, precast concrete structures, steel structures and other specialty objects. The Assistant Fabrication and Materials Supervisor will support highway construction projects Statewide by providing expert and timely inspection of highway materials being fabricated and shipped to project work sites. Under the supervision of the Transportation Technical Engineer (TTE) this position is responsible for leading and supervising Transportation Engineers, managing inspection calls, updating inspection calendars, and delegating inspection assignments.

The official duty station and/or frequency of telework for this position will be determined based on candidate preference and overall business needs. Travel is an expectation of the position. This position is required to perform inspection at construction sites and at fabrication facilities.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Fabrication and Materials Supervisor will:
- Review results of nondestructive tests such as magnetic particle, ultrasonic, and radiographic inspection to determine acceptability.
- Inspect materials to identify nonconforming materials as early in the fabrication process as possible.
- Monitor the manufacturing processes, witness, or perform tests or measurements of the completed product, collect, and review all required documentation to assure compliance with Contract Provisions, and approves the finished product for shipment.
- Identify materials for acceptance in accordance with WSDOT Construction Manual and identify items containing steel for foreign or domestic content.
- Advise project and supplier personnel of materials found to be unacceptable and answers questions relative to materials involved.
- Assist in performing and documenting verification inspection audits on Design Build projects.
- Be responsible for training, managing inspection calls, updating inspection calendars, and delegating inspection assignments to Transportation Engineer 3’s, under the supervision and discretion of the TTE.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of fabrication inspection experience at the Transportation Engineer 3 level; OR four (4) years of experience in construction acceptance inspection.
- Certified Welding Inspector by either the American Welding Society or the Canadian Welding Bureau.
- American Concrete Institute (ACI) Grade I-Field Testing Technician Certification or the ability to obtain within nine (9) months of appointment.
- Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Level I Certification or the ability to obtain within nine (9) months of appointment.
- The ability to effectively communicate technical information to a diverse audience including those with non-technical backgrounds.
- The skills and abilities to perform math calculations by hand, using calculators and computers and understand and interpret the results.
- The ability to manipulate and transport up to 50 pounds of materials and/or equipment.
- A valid Passport, or the ability to obtain a valid passport within three (3) months of appointment.
- A valid driver's license to be able to drive in Washington State.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) Level I Certification.
- American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level I Training in the areas of: Ultrasonic, Magnetic Particle, and Dye Penetrant Testing.

- Travel to the State Materials Lab (training, meetings, drop off paperwork, etc.) as well as regular travel that includes all locations within the State as well as other states and internationally. Travel using various modes of transportation, which may include travel by bus, train, car, airplane, or boat is required.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
